Research Interests:
Over the years, I have worked in research and teaching in econometrics, agricultural marketing and trade, and international and regional development. In econometrics, I have worked mainly with times series models and panel data approaches. In trade, my work has been often focused on foreign direct investment or the impacts of trade liberalization on agriculture (done most extensively in Pakistan and with Saudi Arabian students). My marketing publications have been based on a variety of industrial organization topics using both time series and panel data methods. I have looked at issues in this area focusing on potato demand, the market behavior of five brands of spaghetti sauce, duopoly models for black and green tea and canned fruit.
For the past decade, I have been working on regional development analyses using mainly CGE or input-output models. These have focused on issues of affordable housing, development of the oil and gas sector on public lands, regional economic returns to beef research, and subsidies to private investment (with an example of Hyundai’s decision not to locate in Fort Collins). Finally, some of my most recent work has examined the impacts of different types of productivity change on local economic growth, as well as how expansions in different sectors of an economy affect local growth and equity. In the near future, I plan to work on research related to the role of rural banks in the economic development process.
